00:00.00 alifeinruins One fifty seven David Carlton Connor life and ruins we're here. We're now. Nope I was gonna out. 00:04.30 David Howe Come on pop. 00:09.95 Capt_n Geezy It? Yeah but it has its yeah, um, but other than the scientific divves we had. We've had done a couple fun things we did site maintenance which we talked about of preparing all the buoys and making the die area safe because they're just gone and they're not being kept up. But we did a night dive last night for the bio folks. They want to see these corals spawn. So I mean we all just went in with flashlights but like we got in there before the sun went down so you're just like in the water as it just turns pitch black and they have flashlights. It was like some of the coolest shit like the the whole ocean floor changed. So all the but the eels were out. There was crabs fucking all the corals were fully out like doing their thing. Um, they like watched a more eel fucking get a fish and like wrap around it was like holy shit. Um. 00:44.93 David Howe Were perhaps just fucking. 00:59.80 Capt_n Geezy It was just incredible and then there's a lot of bioluminescence. So if you stir up the stand like all these blue glows happen such just been incredible and then um I was on the one of the first an eagle ray yes, that was a couple days ago and I had missed it because like on that day. 01:06.79 David Howe Did you almost get attacked by a Manor ray. 01:17.59 Capt_n Geezy During this site maintenance I was just I was lionf fish hunting because lionf fish are invasive and they're all over the site. So I just took a spear gun and I was fucking slang lionfish left and right I was having a blast because they don't move and then we had this special tube in them because they're still venomous that we put them in I ended up with like a a decent amount of lionfish. But when you're down in the first dive my buddy Keegan Dive Budd Keegan was like to just see that Eagle Ray that went right behind us because like there's this reef wall that rat and that's where the li fish are so behind us is just open ocean I missed it? Okay sorry reconnected. Um. But then on the second dive as we're going through the reef all of a sudden it got like really hard to see like there's a lot of sediment built up and I thought someone might have just like kicked the ocean floor but it was like really weird like I couldn't figure it out because I couldn't see anybody around and as I'm so as I'm swimming over the. Disturbed sentimentment like I'm pretty close before I see this tail start moving up towards me and it has this fucking Steve Irwin Annihilator just pointed at my chest and I was like I like immediately I was like this is a yes. I immediately kicked up inflated my Bcd a bit to get me out of the way and then once I was able to clear I could see this massive like ten foot wingspan eagle ray that had embedded in the sand to hunt and I had just dumb acidly swam right? over it. 02:49.81 Capt_n Geezy And it upset it and I was like it was like 1 of the coolest things in my life and we brought the photographer in like take fucking pictures of this because it was just incredible like how massive that thing was and how close that came to just getting fucking shanked by a sting rayy. Um, no it was it was. 02:52.78 David Howe Okay, okay. 03:03.34 alifeinruins Those things are no nothing to joke around about man those those sting race are you know they they took the best of us or rp. 03:10.60 Capt_n Geezy Like I've seen skates like the little dinner plate little fuckers but I'm like ten foot wings span. This thing was massive I was just super impressed and every time I go in here to do that archeological work. You know we had that conversation with Mattie Mcalister way back when. Like when you go into these marine environments like it's not sharks you worry about it's air consumption. It's your dive buddies and it's a lot of other local organisms that you you have to be careful about like trying one of the dives the other night. One of our dive masters had her hand. On a coral to kind of brace herself in a surge. The surge is where you kind of get rocked back and forth so a current will push you one way but a surge will rock you and um, everyone else saw this more eel that was below her and it started to coil up and they were able to get her hand out of the way in time because those things have 2 sets of teeth. So the main jaw the frangile. Jaw. All their teeth point backwards and they're fucking nasty like komodo dragons where their mounts are just have so much shit in them that um, they'll fuck you up pretty good and so I know there was a guy who was part of this team like last year he got his hand fucked up. It severed his artery. 04:21.51 alifeinruins Jesus. 04:23.16 Capt_n Geezy And they had tourni they had They had a tourniquet underwater and I don't know what they were doing where they had they came prepared with fucking tourniquets I don't have a tourniket anywhere on my equipment but his hand was still fucked up. We have one on the boat. So um. 04:31.30 David Howe You guys bring up first aid kit now with you? Yeah, okay. 04:38.42 Capt_n Geezy In order to get dive master. You have to be underwater rescue certified so we have like 8 people at in a given time who know what the fuck's going on when it comes to health and safety of the site of of the people. So yeah, it's it's intense and then always monitoring water. 04:49.88 David Howe Gotcha. 04:55.86 Capt_n Geezy Um, that's always like I'm chugging water all the time when I'm on the boat. Um, yeah, it's It's just. 05:00.32 alifeinruins It' it's like counterintuitive like because like you're you're in Salt water so you getting dehydrated constantly. But you know you're think like oh I don't have to drink water or anything like that. But dehydration is a very real thing. It seems like as as part of. 05:11.55 David Howe How do you pee? How do you pee for drinking that much water. 05:15.52 Capt_n Geezy Huh So that's why I don't tuck my wetsuit into my boots. So I don't fill up my boots with piss I just piss in the ocean and then when I'm getting off when of getting off the boat Or're getting back on the boat I kind of like unzip my websuit in the back pre preparedly to try to get all that stuff out. 05:25.70 David Howe Ah. 05:32.80 Capt_n Geezy But I'm not in a dry suit I'm in a wetsuit but like that was one of the first tips like 1 of the students here. Jenna she's like don't tuck your wetsuit into your boots or else just gonna fill your boots with piss. You know you know so it's it's one of those things and like I had to learn. 05:41.85 alifeinruins We got boots full of piss. 05:50.74 Capt_n Geezy Especially I was eating breakfast really heavily here and I learned that was a nono because I was just getting bloated because you know we're at this all-inclusive place where you you have all this food and so like I had to start, especially you know, getting dehydrated getting a loose stool. So I've just been eating fucking Raisin brand every morning like bowls of raisin brands. So I don't get bloated I don't get more oxygen and like I'm not potentially letting out you know shitting my wetsuit. 06:19.70 alifeinruins that's that's important um you did so you mentioned something mention something in the the interim. Um when we're in um, in the green room. We both are all 3 of us and Jacob Arns in shadow ah play this game called see at thieves like. 06:36.74 alifeinruins And an addicts level I don't think we're at David and zelda level. But we we play it a lot. Um and you and but but but you did you did lose use some of your um sea of thieves knowledge or to to save you? um. 06:39.47 Capt_n Geezy Are. 06:40.97 David Howe What yeah we can talk. 06:54.23 Capt_n Geezy Yeah, yeah, so we get back. We usually get back around two o'clock so we can make time for lunch and then we have about 2 hours off before we need to reconvene get reports written do our reports and presentations and figure out the game plan for the next day 06:55.47 alifeinruins Do you do you mind recounting that story. 07:11.42 Capt_n Geezy And so today one of the students who had taken sailing classes like there's sailboats here and you can just rent them for like 30 minutes for free and so that's what we did so I went out with 3 of the students and we did really well we really impressed but she had kept the wind and the way the the wind flow was following the shoreline so we just kind of suited it. 07:27.11 alifeinruins E. 07:30.91 Capt_n Geezy Away from the resort and then we had to turn back and got into this deadtop and she didn't know what she was doing and I was I was like trying to tell her like I know I don't sail but I know like we need to take this other angle. It can take us away from the resort but it'll take us far and out to see that we can then turn the sale again and we can have a better hypotenuse and we just have to do this kind of. Zigzag pattern she wasn't hearing it like she she refused so we get to the deadtop the boat stop. We're going over the the buoys into the the fucking public swimming area. We're getting people yelling at us. So I like hop off the boat and I'm turning the boat myself so it can catch sail and go. And of course the second I do that the fucking boat just takes off and leaves me and look and they can't stop. It. They're letting out the line to have the sail kind of drop and it's just fucking gone and the speedboat comes up to rescue everybody because like we had we were beyond time. And it's trying to get me in the boat I'm like now I'm just fucking swiming to shore like I have a life jacket on I just fucking breast stroke back to shore because like I'm I'm done with this adventure. So I waited for them because like he but he tied them up I thought he's going to slowly bring them to shore. No no, no, they're based on like a fucking. Ah, like 1 of those um, inflatable tubes and he just fucking was whipping them and I heard them reing as they're being towed on this little catamarand and it's just going all over the place I'm like holy shit look I'm so glad I'm not on that boat with those girls but I had this like the second that boat started just just. 08:47.70 David Howe M oh. 09:00.14 Capt_n Geezy Took off and I'm just stuck. There was this moment of like that we see in this game where like if you fall off the ship. The ship's not stopping it just has to keep going and I'm like I'm fucking left here and there's no artificial mermaid to take me back like spaw me back I'm in the middle of the ocean by myself and so I need to like you like this is. This is no not fucking fun of games. So I like just swimmed as short and then made it in time for my deep tissue massage at five o'clock and that that was out. 09:27.10 David Howe Ah, tell. 09:27.96 alifeinruins That's funny because yeah, accept the mechanism in the game is like if you fall off the ship which you do frequently. There's this mermaid that brings you back and you know you can always make it. It's not like a death sentence but like it's the first thing I think yeah. 09:36.91 David Howe And you can fall out the ship quite a bit like Jacob and me our little sailor boy. 09:43.16 alifeinruins Shout out Jacob Arts and our our boy. Um. 09:44.84 Capt_n Geezy So But all in all, it's been.. It's been really interesting. It's really kind of pushed me to think differently about archeology especially in the context of I Really like this living museum concept these like interdisciplinary field schools where you get these different scholars to work together and I'm like trying to see how you can translate that to. Ah, terrestrial context right? because we think about Cahokia Mesa Verde some of these big sites where like the landscape is managed specifically to promote the beauty of the of the archaeology whereas here. The cannons are if they're being overtaken by corals are like actively becoming part of this this underwater environment. 10:12.22 alifeinruins Yeah. 10:20.46 Capt_n Geezy So I've been like thinking how how do we bring this or develop a terrestrial field school that will bring in wildlife biologists and other people to see like how these landscapes these modern day natural Landscapes can be protected and help reinforce protections for cultural landscapes. 10:35.51 alifeinruins Yeah, definitely I mean and especially because all the other sciences in the world are better funded than we are currently. So if you have funding mechanisms and coming from multiple places. It seems like that is the way to go for the future and archeology terrestrial terrestrial archeologists can use soil scientists. 10:48.54 David Howe Yeah. 10:55.42 alifeinruins Biologists I mean we can. We can use a bunch of other disciplines and work with a bunch other disciplines to really do that and then give us money so that I think that's a great idea. Hopefully we can find a way to work that into your future research when you're diving lakes in Nebraska. 11:13.82 Capt_n Geezy Yeah I mean it was I did my defense down here which you guys talked about at the beginning So like I had defend from this from from fucking Dominican Republic and um, like during my presentation I did that horseshoe bit with them I was like yeah so like what we're doing down here with continuing this horse research pull and I pulled out a horseshoe and they're like what the fuck are you doing in the Caribbean Like. You're a plans archeologist like none of us understand what you're doing down. There are you distracted like get your fucking head in the game. You just got like roasted just to be to do like a fun bit of like here's a fucking horseshoe that's covered themselves like and they're like fucking stop. 11:42.76 David Howe Um. 11:46.80 Capt_n Geezy Like it it backfired but will Taylor thought it was funny. He was like okay he's like we did talk about that horseshoe later I'm like yeah we do but like everyone else is like you work in Nebraska like what the fuck is going on. 11:55.61 alifeinruins Well it I think it makes sense I mean you you have to like expand and like get better at archeology. You can't just like stay in 1 place and do the same thing over and over again I mean that's you're not going to use new techniques or something if you if you just stay in the same place and do the same shit over and over again. 12:01.86 Capt_n Geezy Um. 12:03.13 Capt_n Geezy Is. 12:12.47 Capt_n Geezy Yeah, in my museum is partnered with some of his dominican folks who we're like to helping them develop exhibits and curatorial practices. So look I am actually down here doing work I'm very fortunate that the underwater scientistss and the archeologists here at Jesus that was gross. Um, ah. 12:27.70 David Howe Dude if you need to blow your nose blow your notes. Yeah yeah dog. 12:29.37 Capt_n Geezy I I do like this is fucking black mold I Just of amazing. Um, ah that's the you know. 12:34.48 alifeinruins Also Carlton's gonna get us a grant to come down there and do all this research too. So he told us we're we're committing it to the podcast that he said he's going to do it. 12:46.91 Capt_n Geezy The amount of my the amount of friends I have now that are like hey by the way I'm scuba certified I'm like okay that's you are um, but no, there's there's a lot of work that needs to be done here and there's like so much room that people are actively demanding more and more help and it's like atrocious that like the underwater archeology lab in. Santo Domino is in the former prison of the former dictator like it's this tinyass building. There's open tanks outside that have fishing them to keep the mosquitoes down like these things just aren't being taken care of because they just don't have the funding and they want help and they're desperate for it. Um. And they're tired of being taken advantage of by treasure hunters and they want to preserve these things but it's part of a really weird economy where you know you have to slick the hands of ah you know, even the the tour guides because if you're not paying them off to take your their tour guides to the museum. 13:41.24 David Howe Wait did he leave for you or is he just leave for me. Okay. 13:43.98 alifeinruins Oh he left for me too. Yeah, we're there you were saying about the slick in the hands. 13:46.34 Capt_n Geezy Um, is there. 13:56.63 alifeinruins Can you hear us. 13:56.91 Capt_n Geezy Um. 13:58.63 David Howe Grolton You can't hear us. 14:07.19 alifeinruins On that note I think ah Carlton took a took a little tumble down the cliff. Um, now he ah he might have exited at this point because his internet is is bad so this is a call to arms. Hopefully we'll do some more archeology. And that area. Hopefully we will do some archeology in that area. Yeah David. 14:29.80 David Howe Just texting him that we can see him. Yeah oops. So. 14:32.38 Capt_n Geezy Okay, you guys and seeming perfect I'll keep talking. Um, so so yeah there's a lot of help that needs to be done as I was saying there are you know tour guide agencies that if you don't pay them off. They won't bring tourists to your location. So. There's this amazing. Nautical museum that gets less than eighty people that visit a month and it's right next door they drop off tourists and so it's like trying to figure out a system that promotes and protects cultural heritage in ah, very much a country that's dominated by tourism. It's it's difficult so but on. But on that note I really appreciate you guys taking the time to ah, let me talk about my experience on the podcast I'm excited to get back next week and get back in recording and talk about some some more stuff that we do so with that I'll I'll turn it over turn it over to you guys. 15:21.34 David Howe Sounds good. Ah well appreciate it. Carlton um, it's really cool to hear what you're doing. It's ah well I guess you can't hear me. Um, yeah, truly cool to hear what he's doing because I've never actually met anybody. That's done caribbean I mean we've met met quote Maddie in Australia but I mean. 15:23.67 alifeinruins We love you. 15:39.14 David Howe That's like a different country. Um well I guess so is the Dominican Republic but we're we're pretty much linked to the Caribbean here and like yeah, it's It's pretty interesting. 15:48.72 alifeinruins Well I think we're all fascinated by it too I think something it's something that unites us as our love of sailing and kind of like the pirate culture and all those sort of things I mean those are some of our best episodes the ones where we nerd out about that stuff because we all are really super passionate about it and care about it and think it's interesting. Um. 16:04.97 David Howe Yeah. 16:05.48 alifeinruins So hopefully we'll keep talking about this and keep learning from Carlton as ah, he keeps going along and doing this. Um, at this point. Thank you all for listening to us. Um, once again, a reiteerrate always had at the beginning check out the and nhp Bulletin posted by the national park service If you want the real criteria. 16:24.75 alifeinruins Don't listen to us. Thank you to all the people told us that we're dumb we appreciate you. Thank you for all for listening the podcast I think this is the the point where David says that like river rate review. 16:35.56 David Howe Yeah, just rate and you just fuck you just up sorry you got Chris cut that out at Rachel right backing up back it up guys just rate and review the podcast like we really need it on on Apple for sure Donny I appreciate you doing so. Um, turn it over and Conor would you live a life in underwater ruins how might 2 depends on how much air I get. 17:24.23 alifeinruins Yes. 17:32.16 David Howe Um, well I get to drink beer and speak a lot of Spanish I probably would do it. Yeah I'm gonna hang out with mosquito and then ah yeah, um I forgot about that. 17:35.95 alifeinruins Yeah, that's your dream I Mean besides. 17:42.83 alifeinruins Ah, also we have a red bubble store so please go buy stuff. No one's bought anything in 1010 years so you know. 17:49.73 David Howe Redbelbu.com/people/alifeandruinspodcast I think it's just life in ruins. Either way, get some stickers shoot me a Dm if you want stickers I'll get you some um or shoot carlton a dm I should say anyway. Carlton's waiting for us in the green room because he's loaded back in. We will talk to him soon and. Bye I got a joke today. 18:10.89 alifeinruins David has a joke. He says. 18:13.63 David Howe Yeah, all right? What do you call dogs smaller than labs. 18:26.74 David Howe Cats because you basically should just get a cat I phrased that badly what you know? what's a joke you know it's funny dogs that are smaller than labs just get a real dog all right bye. 18:42.30 alifeinruins Bye. 18:42.98 David Howe Wait. Do you have 1 18:44.63 alifeinruins Now we'll just keep that.
